York-Norwich: A Medieval Postgraduate Conference
Welcome to the York-Norwich Postgraduate Conference website. The 2008 conference will be held in York between Friday 6th to Sunday 8th June. The conference has no set theme, but will welcome papers on all aspects of medieval studies.

Statement of Purpose
The York-Norwich conference is open to anyone to attend. There are no registration or attendence fees. Papers will be given by postgraduate students from UEA Norwich, and York University.
The conference aims to provide the opportunity for graduate students at the two institutions to:
- Try out a paper in front of a friendly and knowledgeble audience.
- Respond to questions and discuss their ideas.
- Learn about the work of other students in the field.
- Develop key skills, including presentation and networking.
- Become involved in conference organisation.
The conference is particularly aimed at those students who have had little previous experience of giving an academic paper. Those studying for MAs and first-year PhD students are encouraged to participate, and we hope that the conference provides a valuable opportunity for graduates to present work in progress and get useful feedback in a friendly and informative environment. Accommodation for visiting students will be provided.
It will also provide the opportunity for graduate students to interact in a social as well as academic capacity.
Format
Each speaker has 20 minutes in which to present their paper. Abstracts of around 200 words are welcomed from researchers on any topic within the broad field of medieval studies from graduate students at the University of East Anglia in Norwich and the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of York (including the parent departments of Archaeology, English, History, History of Art, Music etc).
Location
The conference is held in the historic King's Manor site of the Universty of York. King's Manor is the site of the Centre for Medieval Studies, home to York's lively interdisciplinary medieval community.
King's manor is about fifteen minutes walk from York Railway Station, and is easily accessible from the ring road. (Speakers from Norwich In previous years there has been a minibus from Norwich, so you probably won't need to organise your own transport.)
Located just outside the old walls, the site is right in the centre of York, so those at the conference will have easy access to all that the amenities and tourist attractions that the city has to offer.
Accomodation
There are 12 beds available in the historic (though not quite medieval) Bar Convent, around 10 minutes walk from the conference site. The Convent, founded in 1686, still houses a community of Catholic nuns, but today also offers conference venue and accomodation.
Rooms are made available in the first instance to presenters from Norwich, at no charge. Most of the rooms will be shared between two, although some single rooms have also been booked - please contact us if you require one of these.

Social Events
We have planned a full social programme for speakers - the centerpice of this is the Conference Dinner on Saturday. The dinner will be held in the medieval surroundings of the 14th Century Bedern Hall. Places at the dinner are strictly limited. We hope to fully subsidise the cost of food for all speakers and chairs. As well as this, there will be a lunch on Sunday, and on Friday there will be a buffet dinner and quiz in the Black Swan pub.
